It’s been a minute, but happy to be back.

Recently, I had the great pleasure of meeting young and upcoming New York photographer Paul Brickman. After scoping out his work, we met for drinks.

Brickman started building his portfolio in editorial, working with some particularly well-known fashion brands and individuals. Personally, I was interested in Brickman’s images due to their simple beauty and engaging quality. Most of all, I was really drawn to his portraits of musicians and performing artists. You can tell that Brickman has put a lot of care into these portraits, and he developed a relationship that allowed him access to his subjects’ most intimate moments. His Man on the Moon (2008) was so beautiful that I stole a business card with the image just to have a copy.

But what really took me aback was his latest project, Like a Lamb to the Slaughter. Dynamic, funny, pop, utterly bizarre, and at times very dark, this series showcases this young talent’s transition from interesting, compelling but rather safe subject matter to something deeper – a more textured and complicated critique of a youthful consumer subculture and lifestyle, tapping into his own experiences in the fashion industry.

Brickman may be critical, but he is no misanthrope – in fact, the use of the lamb masks started at a party as a joke. Brickman noted the mask’s effect on the public and decided to use the mask as a jumping-off point for a much larger endeavor. I think that particular detail serves the overall project quite well: the sense of bacchanal-type revelry is very much present in the series, albeit with a rather disturbing twist.

Unlike previous works with which Brickman seems to capture a quieter, more reflective and personal subject, Brickman’s anonymous lambs are audacious and rambunctious, not giving a shit about what anybody thinks as they perfectly mimic models, celebrities, and socialites. Brickman’s strongest images, I believe, are those that feature his lambs outright engaging with the viewer. Brickman’s photograph of the lamb in the pool, for example, is all at once amusing and sinister and excessive. The unexpected mask highlights the farcical quality of the rest of the surroundings - a scenario which would have otherwise left us more or less desensitized had it been left untampered.

We’ve seen a lot of these uncanny images of animal-people in fashion recently, from the H&M runway to window displays, seemingly without a hint of irony or Donnie Darko-like menace. As the fashion world grapples with itself, from the over-seriousness displayed by the Old Guard to the sensationalized Lindsay Lohan moment and the struggle to find new eyes and voices (Tavi, anyone?), it’s refreshing to see images that so effortlessly mock the absurdities of the industry, production to press.

Seeing Double: Tribal Influences

I came across a Nitrolicious report while perusing the fashion blogs today: H&M will be launching its third Fashion Against AIDS (FAA) campaign on May 20, 2010, donating 25% of sales to relevant projects. Launching just in time for the summer music festivals, the designers at H&M apparently took their cues from the Coachella set. I do not quite understand this H&M quote regarding the FAA collection, but I'll re-post it. Make what you will of it:

"The style of the festival is a global trend that’s all about freedom of expression and shared experiences. For girls, fashion this summer means a mix of rock, bohemia and glamour, with added ethnic touches, such as denim hot pants or patterned leggings matched with embellished tunic tops" [emphasis added].

Huh? Denim hot pants serve as ethnic touches?

Not sure what H&M is trying to say, but that's besides the point. I was struck by the similarity between the H&M flats (pictured on the right, via Nitrolicious) and the House of Harlow heels which I posted last fall. Is it in poor taste to link back to one's own blog? Because I just did.

I'm not sure which pair I prefer. The HOH heels have an undeniable sex appeal, but I think the H&M flats would be incredibly fun to stomp around in all summer - and would be a killer addition to a weekend wardrobe. Thoughts?

Inspired: Ashish, Viral and Vikrant

Ashish, Viral and Vikrant for Virtues has a truly fun and youthful collection of dresses and ensembles that pay homage to their Indian roots. The look this season seemed quite bohemian-chic, cutting delicious fabrics (re: a mixture of Indian textiles pieced together with popular western fabrics, like denim) so that the authentic beauty of the materials remained clearly visible. In fact, I would say the collection is uncommonly well conceived: these pretty and interesting pieces emphasize the fabric choices subtly and chicly. What's particularly nice is that, despite the obvious nod to heritage textiles and prints, the looks are urban and versatile. I imagine women will be loving these pieces from Bombay to LA and everywhere in between.

Erin Fetherston's Spring 2010 Dresses

I hate to write a blog post about something as mundane as the weather - it's more appropriate conversation for a bad date or a job interview. But I love this time of the year: New York and her locals tend to be in a state of total rhapsody, shedding both woolen layers and surly attitudes. There's nothing I want to do more than drool other delicate dresses in pastel colors - and a gorgeous tan to keep me from looking ridiculous in them.

Less jabber and more fashion. I've been a fan of Erin Fetherston's concoctions for a while, but it's hard to fantasize about her dresses in the middle of a blizzard. Her Spring 2010 collection is incredibly pretty and wearable; very lady-like sans the prissy factor. Last spring, Fetherston's collection was less structured, and it seemed more fitting for a beach vacation, although there were a lot of tiered cloud-like dresses (I preferred the look on shorter hemlines, but that's partly because I'm of a diminutive stature myself, and I don't fare too well in long dresses).

Anyway, old is old. My favorite look this spring is the Rose Bobinette Top with the Rose Bobinette Capelet and the Miniskirt in Floral Cloque. With such a perfect combo of youthfulness and a classic sensibility, it's no wonder that doe-eyed ingenue types like Zooey Deschanel and Kirsten Dunst have modeled her confections.

How I love The Cut, particularly for posting images and prices of Zac Posen's entire Target line. The collection drops April 25, and it's bound to be a huge hit. The Snap Tape Dress is unbelievably cool, although I'm inspired to attempt the bikini-top-and-skirt combo. Too much?

I had the pleasure of catching up with Dave Ortiz and Squishy (his muse) in the LES this evening. A bit of our conversation:

"Being the international star that Squishy is, she decided to design her own women's line to compete with Juicy Couture, because she feels that 'Juicy' is too racy, and not for real women. After she showed the line to all her Hollywood friends, the Creative Director at Adidas, the Marketing Director at Nike, and Karlito Lagerfeld, she decided she needed to establish her own brand - Squishy New York. You may notice the obscure 'New York' - well, this is because she has no thumbs."

L*Space Fringe Benefits

With the fringe trend being quite dominant this spring, it feels like a veritable rodeo out there. I've seen images of this L*Space piece, and I'm quite smitten with it. Granted, it is a bathing suit, but it is ripe with styling opportunities, particularly for those who aren't afraid to bare a bit extra in the warmer weather. For the more demure dressers, use it as a base layering piece. Also available in white and, my favorite, purple.

Tokyo Fashion Week Highlights

I really enjoyed Somarta's RTW Fall 2010 collection; it was sumptuous, dramatic, and full of sensual textures. I really loved the high boots coupled with the lace stockings - definitely on my radar for the fall. Tamae Hirokawa's brocade skirts really struck a cord with me as well. There was something ultimately dark and moody about this collection, and I would love to see the inspiration boards, since I couldn't quite figure out the connection between the horned hairstyle and the rest of the collection. The metal heels on the shoes were an awesome touch, although the accessorizing did tend to venture into slightly costume-y territory.

Paris: Peace Out, 80s

Paris was all over the place. But if there is one definitive point to accept, it is that the 80s trend is over, and we can look forward to a 60s and 70s revival.

Giambattista Valli was my personal favorite for the day, with an undeniable early 60s influence in the silhouettes. The coats looked fresh with a nostalgic air; they seemed appropriate for Audrey Hepburn in a chase scene in Charade. The dresses were frothy and fun, and many of these looks seemed to hearken back to a sophisticated time of revelry (again, I'm envisioning Audrey Hepburn, but this time in the unforgettable New York party scene in Breakfast at Tiffany's). It wasn't all texturing and panelling though - some looks were paired with structured blazers. This dichotomy only managed to heighten the sex appeal.

Stella McCartney was all business. Nothing was short of sheer and chic modernity, and while some pieces were distinctively mod (largely due to some smart color blocking), there was nothing particularly retro about the collection. The clothes felt grown up and mature, catering less to a runway-frequenter and more to an Upper East Side set.

If Stella McCartney was serious, Yves Saint Laurent was flat-out sedated. Over sized hats flopped over models' faces like poorly-fit habits, and heavy gold chains laid against somber palettes like crucifixes. Stefano Pilati's show wasn't boring, though - the ensembles may have lacked color and vitality, but a real sense of drama was present: the 70s cuts, the unusual suiting accents, the hidden faces, the gloves, the capes.

Kenzo was wonderfully weird. Imagine a boho/hipster Diane Keaton in Annie Hall, artfully mixing hippie prints with men's suiting. A word of caution: be careful when styling this look. On one hand, you may seem free-spirited and quirky, on the other, the style may render you dateless till Spring 2011.

And Ungaro - oh, Ungaro. After the Lindsay Lohan debacle, the fashion house has desperately tried to make up for the poorly conceived and executed publicity stunt. Unfortunately for the gossip-lovers, the heart-shaped pasties were omitted from this season's collection. The pieces were structured better, but the show lacked vision. While other designers started exploring new silhouettes of modernity and maturity, Estrella Archs seemed to still be stuck in the 80s, and the look just seems tired and played out. Uninspiring, to say the least.

And The Winner Is...Penelope Cruz

I think it's safe to say that style-wise, this year's Academy Awards was a bit of a buzzkill. Jennifer Lopez looked like she was swathed in a bed spread in Armani Prive, Charlize Theron's Vera Wang ensemble was a chesty mess, and even the evening's leading lady - Sandra Bullock in Marchesa - just looked safe, albeit pretty.

Penelope Cruz, however, was a knockout. In all honesty, I am terribly biased: I firmly believe that she is one of the most uncommonly beautiful women in Hollywood, and she has enough attitude and fire in her personality to pull off even the most dramatic looks.

In her crimson Donna Karan dress last night, she was a vision, and out-shined many of the other starlets.

Of course, Penelope Cruz is known for wearing dramatic dream-worthy gowns: Remember the iconic blush Atelier Versace gown at the 2007 Academy Awards?

Dolce + Gabbana Is Utterly Stunning

I read enough reviews about Dolce & Gabbana's stellar collection, but didn't get much of an opportunity earlier to really check out the images. It is absolutely incredible. I highly recommend checking out the full collection when you get a chance.

I thought I was really over the lingerie-inspired trend, until I saw this.

Mario Moya Fall 2010 Collection

I got a chance to help out at the Mario Moya show, and I really loved his collection for the fall. The pieces were ultra-feminine and classic silhouettes with sexy accents. It was all film-noir Hollywood glamour, mixed with the definitive Parisian timelessness: perfect coiffures, rouged lips, winged eyeliner. Seeing the collection, I really felt that Moya was tapping into a romantic narrative without endangering his work by getting too costume-y.

I really enjoyed his Noir Powernet Monroe Dress. Moya works well with sheer accents; he knows how to use them to seduce subtly. The Noir Chiffon Femme Fatale Blouse with the Noir Wool Diamond Skirt was another personal favorite - the exposed back really sold me. It had a really great cut, and it looked stunning on the model. I think both this and the Citron Apocalypse Gown with the Citron Blaze Cape would photograph beautifully, and they would make really interesting editorial pieces.

Sartorial Sleight of Hand

I was lucky enough to attend the Prabal Gurung show during Fashion Week. I really liked some pieces, and I enjoyed the young designer's play with color blocking.

On a side note, I saw Anna Wintour at the show. And she was so cool. And maybe this is embarrassing to admit, but I felt like I had just seen a unicorn.

Ibrahim Ahmed and Resin Denim

I recently saw some work by up-and-coming artist Ibrahim Ahmed, and I loved it. I'm really fascinated by artists who tap into their heritage subtly without ramming an agenda down my throat. Ahmed's work is meditative, sensual, and quite beautiful.

Ahmed works with a lot of non-traditional media, i.e. windowpanes, that evoke a sense of spirituality and lightness. He's definitely tapped into his Middle Eastern influences in a fresh way - his windowpanes speak to the tradition of using stained-glass windows to lend a sense of light and warmth to architecture.

Ok, I'm getting a bit art-nerdy, and I apologize.

Interestingly, he's also got another pet project: he has designed the artwork for Resin Denim, a new label that is already being whispered about amongst those in the know (there was even a recent window display at Barney's). Ahmed did the work on the pocket designs and linen.

Of course, my initial thought was, "Why denim?" After all, a lot of artists do get involved in the fashion scene - but they tend to break in through magazines or women's wear. But upon further thought, it really makes sense. You can really see a sense of authenticity to the materials in Ahmed's artwork - simply constructed wooden window frames, glass, acrylic, metal. Resin is an organic artist's material.

And denim? Designing a great pair of jeans is, not to be too corny, a total art. After all, it is a simple workers' fabric that has been redefined and repurposed by the fashion world. Styling and accessorizing denim does not speak to the utter complexities of comprehending and working with this material.

Someone who understands denim must realize the singular importance of being authentic to this fabric and its history: the sense of movement and comfort it embraces; the strict understanding of style it necessitates. And frankly, I think we are all familiar with the harrowing aftermath of the recent ill-fated era of bedazzlement. From now onwards, I want the person designing my denim pieces to have a discerning eye - not some jewels, a hot-glue gun, and too much enthusiasm.

The Heartbreaking Loss of Alexander McQueen

This morning, upon learning that visionary designer Alexander McQueen had passed, my initial thought was that he couldn't handle the pressure of out-doing his Spring 2010 collection.

I now take that back. As the news settles in, I am terribly upset to think that such an artist is gone. Few designers have such a knack for balancing theatrics and genuine sartorial genius - and I have not a doubt in my mind that McQueen would have shocked and offended and bemused us all again.

Who can forget the spectacle of lithe models gliding down the stage with the bizarre ten inch lobster-alien shoes, carefully masking their trepidation behind detached faces? Or what of the hologram of Kate Moss? His bow at the end of a show in a bunny costume? Bumsters? The "Highland Rape" collection? McQueen took chances, and some were successes, and some - not so much.

But frankly, I have never questioned his technical abilities and talent. The man could cut and drape cloth like nobody's business. I remember the first time I saw a dress from his Spring/Summer 2003 collection, made out of sand-colored organza and chiffon. I think it spoke to every one of my romantic sensibilities and fantasies. The stunning, shredded goddess-at-sea piece was reminiscent of the powerful wet-drape folds covering the Nike of Samothrace.

And I suppose that is why I'm so upset by the loss of Alexander McQueen. His penchant for the spectacle and the spectacular never felt like artifice: he buttressed even his most ridiculous creations with uncommonly excellent craftsmanship. He tapped into our greatest fears and dreams; he fed our appetites for romance and sin. His presence will be missed dearly.

Get Inked with Les Trompe L’Oeil de Chanel

In what I can only describe as pure genius, Chanel will be offering temporary tattoos, called Les Trompe L’Oeil de Chanel, for a mere $78 (compare that with a handbag). I am, rightly so, pretty obsessed.

These aren't your basic glitter-infused tattoos, either. If you buy Chanel, you get Chanel, and you better rock it. They are based on Peter Philips's designs for the Chanel Spring 2010 RTW show. The look ranges from delicate strands of pearls to thicker chain bracelets, flowers, and more.

I love the idea of stacking them together at the wrist, and I absolutely adore the way the models wore them around their thighs - so obscenely sexy and unusual, especially when paired with a short full skirt, or maybe a really great slightly A-line skirt in a fabric that drapes sensuously (velvet? silk chiffon, perhaps?).

I think anyone who knows me can testify to the fact that I spent the early half of 2009 donning more lady-like ensembles: bustiers with full skirts and soft lines. In 2010, I'm looking forward to keeping some aspects of this flattering silhouette for my day-to-day, but beefing it up with a far stronger & bolder visual elements. My inspirations? Beyonce in her recent music videos, Manish Arora's RTW Spring 2010 line, and the very positive and strong people in my life. Cheers!

The DC Rape Crisis Center is looking for a little help this holiday season. Funding has been cut significantly for the Center, so they have started raising money to buy underwear for victims after they leave their medical exams. Amazingly, the Crisis Center no longer has money for something as small (but important) as undies.

I have a crush on Erica Weiner's Steel Pen Nib Necklaces. These pieces look both delicate and dangerous (the website even warns that they're sharp enough to ever-so-slightly stab a fool). According to the website, the designer found the nibs in a barn in Maine, soldered on brass rings, and put them on chains. The result is charming coupled with bad ass. At $45, they make for extremely affordable and original gifts (especially for the writer in your life).

I have known Brooklyn-based artist Valerie Feingold for years now, and I've become a huge fan of her handcrafted, nature-inspired jewelry. Her Treeleaf Cuff is one of my staples (and it looks even hotter when I have a tan). This year, I'm hoping to snag the large Art Deco Cuff in brass or gold.

Zac Posen for Target (or, a Holiday Miracle)

After gushing incessantly about Rodarte for Target, the mega-chain has given me another reason to swoon: Zac Posen is slated to design a collection for Target's Go International series. According to WWD, the collection will be available April 25 till May 30, 2010, both in-store and online.

Just recently, Posen unveiled his Z Spoke line at Saks, a "budget-friendly" collection, starting with t-shirts retailing at $78. As The Cut points out, the Target line may further spike the rumors that the label is suffering financially.

Regardless, I'm stoked. I fell quite blissfully in love with the designer in college, when I was fortunate enough to snag a last-minute ticket to the Zac Posen Spring 2008 RTW show during Fashion Week (who knew interning could have such exquisite perks?). Although that particular collection was heavily criticized, Posen's creations, and the runway show, reflected the designer's knack for totally transforming the viewer's experience into a fantastical dream.

Not a lot has been revealed about the Target collection, i.e. price point or design influences, but I'm sure something will leak online sooner or later. I'll keep you posted.

In the tradition of all great fashion moments, I have given my blog a makeover (Agyness Deyn's new brunette look is on my mind right now). Regardless, I'd like to thank my ever-patient and enthusiastic family and friends for helping me put it together. Most of all, I'd like to thank the queen of ridiculously awesome makeovers, Sam - my very dear friend who decided to show up to our prom (in Texas) rocking a golden tan and a bright pink updo. To this date, it's still one of the most inspiring, and utterly ballsy, looks I've ever seen.

Michelle Obama Wears Rachel Roy and Naeem Khan

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur arrived at the White House yesterday. When speaking about the evening's reception, Michelle Obama wore a dress by American-born Indian designer Rachel Roy, and in the evening, she wore a dress by Indian-American designer, Naeem Khan. According to Mrs. O/The Cut:

"The strapless gown features hand cut sterling silver sequins sewn on nude silk chiffon, which create an abstract floral pattern. The dress is entirely handmade, requiring three weeks of work by 40 people, completed in Naeem Kahn's family workshop in India."

Supposedly Khan's instructions were to create something "Indian, chic, simple, but very glamorous."

I think this dress looks stunning on Michelle Obama, as most clothes do on her, and I love that she made the effort to patron American-Indian designers for the occasion (shout out to the motherland). While the dress doesn't necessarily speak to the brightly-hued glittery saris of the western imagination, the intricate, delicate work, the craftsmanship, and the fluid fabrics are key factors in Indian eveningwear, both modern and traditional.

Ballet & Bolts: Thank You, Alexander McQueen

Today, I received the link to this Interview post, penned by Ana Finel Honigman. Yet again, I'm overwhelmed by Alexander McQueen's distinct vision, particularly when designing unrivaled accessories.

McQueen's Titanic Ballet Pump, from the Spring 2010 collection, is an incredible piece: on one hand, the shade of soft pink leather is perfectly in sync with a ballerina's first pair of slippers, and yet the platform is reminiscent of the box of a pointe shoe. And then, of course, there's that heel... made of hardware.

Honigman acutely points out, "Few non-dancers watch The Nutcracker and think about hip replacement surgery, which is why Alexander McQueen's Titanic Ballerina pump has such uncanny erotic allure. Its overtly sexy silhouette is like a direct flick of the finger to death, decay and the consequences of decadence."

I think she's on the mark. But since art is open to interpretation, I have a slightly different reading of this shoe: the stunning heel is an obvious nod to architectural grace, and with all its parts revealed, it seems like a piece of the Eiffel Tower was glued to the bottom of a ballet shoe. Beauty has taken two forms, one is the effortless charm of the the pink ballet shoe, and another is the intricate - and almost frightening - mechanical elegance of the heel. The Titanic, heralded for its technology and unsurpassed luxury, is a prime example of mankind's hubris inciting nature's wrath. But over-analyzing aside, I can't get over these shoes. Maybe it's because I was a ballerina in my teens? I don't think I ever felt cooler than when rocking a leotard, tights, and pointe shoes (I'm quite the dork, I know).

When I Was Thirteen, I Wasn't as Cool as Tavi Gevinson

At thirteen years old, Style Rookie's blogger Tavi Gevinson is making quite a name for herself on the fashion scene. Gevinson started her blog at the age of eleven (seriously) and has developed an impressive following. In Teen Vogue, the Mulleavy sisters reportedly said, "Tavi defines Rodarte for Target... she's curious and discerning."

She was recently on the cover of Pop magazine, designed by Damien Hirst. Now, the the quirky teenager is traveling to Tokyo, where she will be the guest of honor at the Comme des Garçons' holiday party this Friday, November 27th, and where she will meet Rei Kawakubo. On Style Rookie, Gevinson describes herself at the type of girl who "scatters black petals on Rei Kawakubo's doorsteps and serenades her in rap."

I love this blog. She's a surprisingly good writer, and she's got a whimsical personal style. Reading Gevinson's blog reminds me of how I felt about fashion when I was growing up - something liberating that helped me escape to a far more exciting world.

The Countdown Begins: Rodarte for Target

A couple of months ago, I saw some images of the Rodarte for Target collection via nitro:licious, and while the designs were appealing, the images made it difficult to tell whether or not the pieces would look chic or cheap (you can see what I mean by checking the bottom image consisting of twelve looks - the clothes piqued my interest, but the styling needs reworking).

Now that the collection has been photographed by several magazines, a) it seems absolutely fabulous and b) it's an editorial darling. In Vogue's December 2009 issue, the two looks featured are perfect Holiday ensembles. In particular, I've been salivating over the black lace dress, although the I'm quite partial to the mustard hue in the second look. I hope to snag several of the cardigans and the skeleton dress as well. I like the range, too - delicate dresses, rocker-inspired skeleton and leopard dresses, versatile cardigans, and casual vests and tops. There's plenty to work with!

Kate and Laura Mulleavy (the designing sisters behind Rodarte) are fast becoming my heroines. More exciting news: according to another nitro:licious report, Eugenia Kim and Cynthia Vincent will each be launching a limited-edition collection at Target - details to come.

The collection drops on December 20th, 2009, and will be available till February 6, 2010. And, thankfully, you can avoid the sartorial maelstrom by shopping online!

Jolie-Pitt: Saving the World, One Designer Accessory at a Time

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are launching an accessories line this week with Asprey. According to WWD, the snake-inspired collection of gold and silver jewelry, dubbed "The Protector", starts at $525...for a baby spoon. All net proceeds will go to Jolie's charity, the Education Partnership for Children of Conflict. Jolie supposedly favored the serpent theme because, when pregnant with daughter Shiloh, Jolie wore a ring in the shape of a snake, and now she believes that they serve as a family talisman.

Frankly, I'm less impressed by the rings and necklaces, which are attractive but have been done already, and more interested in the unique design of the baby spoon and the silver cup. These pieces are incredibly sculptural, and pretty bad ass for a baby.

McQueen's Muse: Lady Gaga in her "Bad Romance" Video

Alexander McQueen's Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear collection was incontestably the most memorable show of the season. Love it or hate it, the over-the-top line exploring mankind's doomed relationship with earth, in which we all end in a watery chaos and morph into creepy mutants, was fascinating.

Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" premiered at the show, and now that the video has finally dropped, it's pretty evident that McQueen and LG have their own love affair going. LG eerily skulks around in McQueen's ten inch stilettos, reminiscent of camel hoofs, and totally owns it.

God Save Luella

I am a huge fan of Luella Bartley's ladylike, incredibly fun and fresh take on clothes, so I was really disappointed to hear that her label has been forced out of business since her distributor, VSQ, withdrew its backing. Only a year ago, Bartley was named Designer of the Year at the British Fashion Awards.

Luella's Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear collection was fantastic: 60s-inspired, ultra-feminine puff-bell silhouettes and sweetheart necklines with a distinctly British edge. I really hope someone steps in and helps the label out!

The former Vogue journalist once described her clothes as "the kind you can get drunk and fall over in", and accordingly, some of Britain's most famous It-Girls have been seen romping and raving in her creations. Maybe they should take up Luella's cause - I'd personally love to see Lily Allen and Peaches Geldof hosting a bake sale, but that's just me (Note: I'm a huge fan of both).

I Thank Victoria's Secret For Giving Me Role Models

Victoria's Secret held a nation-wide model search, and the results are in: ten bodacious ladies are currently competing for America's...heart and soul.

NY Magazine's daily blog, The Cut, reports that these young women will be in "Angel Bootcamp". This is a magical and inspiring place, in which model-hopefuls are sure to participate in "a series of challenges where the contestants will show their photogenic qualities, prove their abilities as a spokesmodel, show off their red carpet star quality and radiate charisma while walking a runway in lingerie."

I'm not sure how one radiates charisma while strutting down a runway in underwear, but I believe that Victoria's Secret will find a way. I really hope they broadcast the interview segment!

I hate to beat up on these girls. Of course, they are lovely women. But I have some difficulty hearing young Kylie, an Angel Aspirant, giggle into a microphone, stating, "I should be the next Victoria Secret Runway Angel [giggle] because I could be out there, I'll bring a sexiness to the runway, a flirtiness, and a fun personality..."

I'm curious to know what she thinks Giselle, Heidi, and Adriana brought to the VS Runway. Advancements in sociopolitical theory?

I Feel So Awkward: The December Issue of Harper's Bazaar

Prepubescent girls (and quite a honestly, a lot of my twenty-something friends) are going to be gawking at the cover of December's Harper's Bazaar. The magazine features Twilight heartthrobs Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart on the cover, with a full goth-glam fashion spread. Yay, more vampires!

In the tradition of all cheesy vampire narratives, the shoot features two star-crossed lovers in lots of black, crimson roses to denote true love, and, naturally, lots of eyeliner to underscore brooding, fervent eye-love-making. Pattinson looks quite handsome in his Dior Homme, and Stewart rocks an Alexander Wang dress as she clings to Pattinson on a motorcycle - because vampires are bad boys. Get it? Good.

But in an Alexander McQueen gown, the nineteen-year-old looks like a teenager who's just lost in a big expensive dress. Maybe Beyonce could pull it off? The gown commands a presence that the seemingly shy, evasive Stewart just isn't ready to give us. But then again, maybe it's not her fault - maybe it's the intensely awkward Pattinson, who's trying to seduce the camera while blatantly ignoring his beloved.

D-Day is Upon Us

Knowing that Jimmy Choo's collab with H&M would be dropping in a mere ten days (gasp!), and after hearing the endless buzz about the party in LA, I checked the website to peek at the collection again. Protocol for the drop date seems tedious enough (H&M has a fairly detailed policy for you eager shoe-mongers), so I suspect I'll be nixing the line. Frankly, while some of the shoes are pretty hot, spending $299 at H&M for a pair of boots (albeit beautiful, 100% leather, knee-high stiletto boots) seems absurd. I suppose the prices are easier on the pocketbook than Jimmy Choo's standard fare, but I still don't feel quite right about it.

My favorite pair is this incredible black leather/grommet-and-cut-out-embellished number. So chic, but I have a feeling that by the time I make it to the downtown store, it's going to be sold out. If anyone wants to grab me a pair in a size 9, I'll love you for it.

Gossip Girl's Latest Guest Star: Valentino 360 Bag

Known less for its content and more for its incredible fashion, Gossip Girl has had a slew of guest stars this season. Between Tyra Banks, Hillary Duff, Bree Williamson, and now, Valentino's 360 Bag, I'd have to say the latter has been my personal favorite.

In one of the most awesomely shallow conversations on TV this fall, Blair and Brandeis (played by Bree Williamson) managed to name some of the best players on the show within 30 seconds. Highlights:

Blair: “I love your 360...Very smart to pair it with Peter Som.”
Brandeis: “You’re good.”
Blair: “I know. I’m Blair. May I?”
Brandeis: “Sure.”
Blair: “From the moment I saw it it joined the list of Blair’s most wanted. Believe me when I tell you, I don’t say this very often. But I like you.”
Brandeis: “Well give me those peep toes and I’ll believe you.”
Blair: “Sorry, but Alexandre Birman’s are sacred.”
Brandeis: “Amen.”

Introducing House of Harlow 1960 Footwear

Most celebrities-turned-style-doyennes tend to design rather underwhelming collections (or, better yet, are responsible for some of the greatest fashion train wrecks, a la Lindsay Lohan's heart-shaped pasties for Ungaro). But I can't deny when one of these starlets predicts, spot-on, what I want for the upcoming season. Perfect example: Nicole Richie's House of Harlow is expanding its accessories line to include footwear, available Spring 2010. I'm pretty excited about this collection; the strong tribal designs on fiercely feminine silhouettes make a knock-out statement. The first two designs look fantastic, and I'm curious to see the full line -- and if/how the footwear line will complement the new contemporary line she's launching, Winter Kate.
